Joseph Roach named Monroe principal

The New Richmond Board of Education Thursday night approved the hiring of Joseph P. Roach as the new principal at Monroe Elementary. He replaces Mark Bailey who is now the principal at New Richmond High School.

"I am very happy to announce the approval of Joe Roach by the BOE,” said Supt. Adam Bird. “We are excited to be able to attract a candidate like Mr. Roach to NREVSD. He has extensive experience in providing for the education of all students, including those students who are gifted and those with special needs."

Joseph P. Roach
Roach, a graduate of Anderson High School and a resident of Anderson Township, comes to Monroe after six years as an assistant principal for both Sycamore’s Montgomery and Blue Ash Elementary schools.

A graduate of Bowling Green State University, Roach earned a master of education degree from Xavier University. He was a teacher for nine years prior to becoming an administrator including five years at Sycamore’s Edwin H. Green Intermediate School, three years at Cincinnati’s Gamble School and one year at an elementary school in High Point, North Carolina.

“Education is the same everywhere,” Roach said regarding the challenge of going from a large suburban district to a rural school like Monroe. "We all are trying to do what is best for the kids and kids are the same whethere it’s the city, the suburbs or the country.”

Roach brings an extensive administrative resume to the New Richmond district including duties as the instructional leader for the two Sycamore elementary schools which totaled 1065 students; a case manager for special education; response to intervention school leader; overseer of two district autism units and one district ED unit; evaluation of all teaching and classified staff at his buildings; and developer of an elementary professional learning community model.

He also developed all building schedules and implemented technology programming for the two elementary schools where he split his time as assistant principal.

“I’m looking forward to building a bond with the families, students and the community at Monroe,” said Roach. “I’m fortunate to be following in the footsteps of someone like Mark Bailey and to take over at a great school with an outstanding staff.”

Integrated math coming to NRHS

New Richmond High School students and advanced 8th grade students who are eligible to take high school math for credit while still in the Middle School will experience a problem solving approach to math studies this fall.
New Richmond ath teachers (from right) Vicky Corpuz, Carla Corbin and Andrew Helton are writing the new integrated Math 9 course of study combining Algebra I and II and Geometry.

New Richmond High School math teachers Vicky Corpuz and Carla Corbin and New Richmond Middle School math teacher Andrew Helton are writing the new Math 9 course of study to meet the integrated approach to mathematics which is an option in the new Common Core State Standards.

The new standards allow an integration of Algebra I & II and Geometry over a three year/three credit program rather than discrete math offerings in separate courses.

“This approach will involve more problem solving, student interaction, deeper studies of concepts and use of portable laptop computer labs in each classroom,” noted John Frye, Director of Student and Staff Services for the New Richmond Exempted Village School District.

“The interactive classroom is designed to include less direct instruction and more discovery learning by students.”

Monroe principal doesn't chicken out

The strength of any school is its PTO  and Monroe Elementary's PTO showed that strength at the end of the 2011-12 school year by raising $9113 in its annual Walk-a-Thon.

Monroe principal Mark Bailey, who will taking over as principal at New Richmond High School at the end of June, played a big role in that fund raiser by agreeing to wear a chicken suit for the day if the PTO exceeded its goal of $8000.
