Teachers volunteer for iPad training
The school year started early for approximately 100 teachers and staff in the New Richmond Exempted Village School District who volunteered for technology training on the integration of iPads into the classroom.
"We averaged about 35 per day for three-day training sessions," explained Matt Prichard, NREVSD director of technology, who conducted the training sessions along with staff members Steve Wolf and Julie Edmondson.
Teachers at New Richmond High School began using iPads and associated educational apps as instructional tools last year. The successful integration at the high school led to Board of Education approval to extend the program to all teachers in the district.
The BOE also approved mobile iPad carts for all five district buildings where they will be used as needed by teachers in the classroom and also for future state mandated online student assessments.
"We believe that it's important to get technology in the hands of our students.," explained Supt. Adam Bird. "In order for our students to take advantage of educational apps on the iPad carts, our teachers had to have one as well and be trained on it so they could be the leader in their classroom."

NRHS athletes monitored for concussions
New Richmond High School is turning to technology to closely
monitor its athletes for concussions.
“It’s called Baseline Testing for Concussions,” explained
NRHS athletic director Doug Foote, who is having athletes in all sports undergo
online ImPACT (Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) testing
prior to competing during the 2012-13 school year.
“Our trainer Megan Barhorst is running the program,” said
Foote. “We are going to test all our athletes now and then we’ll do it every
two years. We’ll do all the incoming freshmen and then do juniors after that.
They have to come in and do a test on a computer and then if they get hit in
the head in any way, form or fashion we will redo their test and see where they
are at and we will have a baseline for that test.”
The non-invasive computerized test is set up in a video game
format and takes about 15 to 20 minutes. It tracks information such as memory,
reaction time, speed and concentration.
“However, it is not an IQ test,” said Barhorst, who is assigned
to New Richmond High School by Wellington Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine and
is in her fourth year at New Richmond.
Concussions have not been a major problem during Barhorst’s
time at New Richmond but they remain an area of great concern for the school.
“We had four concussions all of last year,” said Barhorst.
“That is not bad at all for us, but what we are trying to avoid are concussions
slipping by and us not noticing them.”
“It’s a great program and a lot of schools are doing it,”
said Foote. “Supt. (Adam) Bird and I have been talking about it for about a
year and we decided to implement the program this year.”
“For first time, all NRHS athletes will get baseline
concussion testing before the season starts,” said Bird. “Thanks to Doug Foote
for making this happen.”

Rotary donates $1500 to district
The New Richmond Exempted Village School District has received a donation of $1500 from the Springboro Rotary Club for the purchase of two multipurpose outdoor tents.
The donation was delivered by Tom Fodor, chief executive officer of the Dayton Chapter of The American Red Cross as the June 28 Board of Education meeting.
"The Springboro Rotary Club wanted to do something for Ohio communities hit by the tornado," said Fodor. "The Club took an interest in the effects on Moscow’s young people since our Club has a Rotary Interact Club at Springboro High School."
During a visit to Moscow as part of the Red Cross relief effort, Fodor learned that Moscow was part of New Richmond school district and began working with Interim Principal Jim Smith for something the school needed that may have been overlooked in light of all the tornado devastation.
Fodor, Smith and other school officials determined that multipurpose outdoor tents would be useful to the school, which is used as a Red Cross shelter when needed during disaster recovery efforts.
"Our club voted to purchase two of those tents and only asked that perhaps a small patch noting 'Donated By Springboro OH Rotary 2012' be a sewn or attached to the tents," said Fodor.
The Springboro High School Interact Club raised a part of the $1500 donation with the bulk coming from from the Springboro Rotary Club’s charitable fund.
