AD Doug Foote appointed to District board

New Richmond High School athletic director Doug Foote has been appointed  to the Ohio High School Athletic Association's Southwest District Athletic Board for the 2013-14 school year.

Mr. Foote replaces Mark Hughes, the retiring athletic director at Oakwood High School, as the AA representative to the SWDAB.

The OHSAA is divided into six districts with the Southwest District covering 15 counties stretching from Cincinnati to Indian Lake.

“I really look forward to serving on this board in such an important time with all the changes going on with Open draw tournaments, Turnkey process for hosting tournaments, Eligibility and competitive balance issues and much more," said Foote, who is in his 5th year as AD at New Richmond after 15 years as head basketball coach at Marietta College. He also coached basketball at Rio Grande University.

Western Brown athletic director Tim Cook also serves on the SWDAB board and servces as vice president.

"It's nice to have two Southern Buckeye Conference AD’s on the SWDAB board," said Foote.

Scott Kaufman from Lakota West High School was also appointed to the board as a Class AAA representative to replace Western Hills AD Jim Sherrard. Other board members are Andy Bixler, superintendent of Anna Local Schols; John Kronour, superintendent at Tipp City; Pat McBridge, superintendent at Newton Local Schools; Jonas L. Smith, athletic director for Dayton Public Schools; Jan Wilking, athletic director at Oak Hills; and Steve Zimmerman, athletic director at Nagel Middle School.

"Adam (Supt. Adam Bird and Mark (NRHS principal Mark Bailey) have been great to allow me to stay involved in the SWD Athletic Directors meetings and committees, the OHSAA meetings and the SWDAB as well as the SBAAC and the committees I serve on it," said Foote. "Some of our all day meetings will cause me to miss a few events at NR they have allowed me to serve which I think is very important for New Richmond and our league."

NRHS students reach Paris

New Richmond High School French teacher Roger Nyam and Spanish teacher Sharon Nehls are taking more than 40 of their students on a summer trip to France and Spain.

"We arrived safely in France  and the kids are having fun and learning a lot ," said Nyam, who will record the trip through group photos. "We are in front of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris."

Former Supt. Pete Wilson remembered

Loren "Pete" Wilson, 74, who began his career in education at New Richmond in 1962 and served as the Superintendent of New Richmond Schools from July of 2000 to March of 2003, died Sunday, June 9, at his home in California, Ky., after a long battle with cancer.

Wilson, who was a teacher and assistant football coach at New Richmond in 1962, also served as principal at Hamersville High School (now Western Brown) and superintendent at Milford.

"Pete Wilson was an educator who really cared about the kids, teachers and the community he served," noted John Frye, director of pupil and staff services for New Richmond, who followed Wilson as superintendent at Milford.

 "He served schools in many ways as teacher, coach, building administrator, treasurer, business manager, superintendent," noted Frye. "In each capacity he did what he believed was right and in the best interest of children.  Pete was a private man who preferred to remain  behind the scenes and let others take credit.  He had a big heart for schools and school kids."

"I remember Pete as my Middle School Track coach," said school board member David Hawkins. "Pete had a great intensity to teach and coach and taught kids to compete at their highest level."

Wilson was born on August 29, 1938, in Kenton County, Ky.  and maintained homes in both California and Milford.    He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sue Ball Wilson; his daughter Lori Sue (Kyle) Weber; his sister Paula Sue (David) Mullins; his brothers-in-law, Edward Ellis (Nancy) Ball and Louis Allen (Marty) Ball and many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Loren and Agnes (Elmore) Wilson and his brother, Guy Wilson.

Wilson was graduated from Campbell County High School and received his Bachelor's degree from Eastern Kentucky University and his Master's and Specialist's degrees from Xavier University.

Visitation will be Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Alexandria Funeral Home, 325 Washington St., Alexandria, Ky.  Memorial Service immediately following.  Burial will be in Ball Family Cemetery, California, Ky.

Math 24 Challenge winners

New Richmond's 2013 Math 24 challenge winners were (from left) Holly Chandler (6th grade Monroe Elementary), Aubrey Stanforth (4th grade Locust Corner Elementary) and Alessandro DiSalvo (5th grade Locust Corner Elementary). The Math 24 tournament attracted a record 40 NREVSD students, who had to use four numbers that appeared on game cards to add, subtract, multiply or divide in order to reach an answer of 24. The challenge was hosted by Locust Corner Elementary.

NREVSD kindergarten registration

New Richmond Exempted Village School District parents are urged to register their kindergarten age children as soon as possible for the 2013-2014 school year to help the district plan for the number of kindergarten classes at its New Richmond, Monroe and Locust Corner elementary schools.

Parents outside the NREVSD area must first apply for open enrollment before registering their child.

Children must be 5 years old on or before August 1, 2013 to be eligible for kindergarten for the 2013-2014 school year.

Kindergarten registration will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at the NREVSD Central Office, 212 Market Street, 3rd Floor, in New Richmond.

Parents or guardians should bring the following information when they register their child:
 
• Original Birth Certificate 
• Social Security Card 
• Immunization Records 
• Picture I.D. of Custodial Parent or Legal Guardian 
• Proof of Residency (cable bill, water bill, gas/electric bill)

Renner leaving LCE for Loveland

Juliann Renner has accepted a position with Loveland City Schools as director of student athletics after 10 years as principal at New Richmond's Locust Corner Elementary.

"I would not be telling the truth if I said this was an easy decision," said Renner, who began her teaching and administrative career at Loveland before joining the New Richmond Exempted Village School District. "The last 10 years I have spent at Locust Corner have been a blessing. I cannot say enough about the caring school staff that I have been privileged to work with over this past decade."

"Ms. Renner has been a tremendous asset to NREVSD and to Locust Corner Elementary for a decade," said NREVSD principal Adam Bird, who has started a statewide and regional search for a replacement. "During her time as principal, Locust Corner has grown to be the largest elementary in our school district.  She is a talented and energetic administrator.  We wish her well as she moves to a new challenge."

Renner spent four years as a teacher at Loveland High School and later became an assistant principal for Loveland Schools.

"I applied for the Loveland AD job 10 years ago and didn't get it," noted Renner. "I feel it was God's will that I didn't get it then because it led me to Locust Corner. I will miss the students here a lot. They hold a place in my heart and many memories which will be forever stamped in my mind."

Renner praised the NREVSD Board of Education and Supt. Adam Bird and district treasurer Teresa Napier in her resignation letter.

"I admire their leadership styles and how they make the staff of the New Richmond School District feel important and respected," said Renner.
