Kindergarten registration begins April 6

The New Richmond Exempted Village School District will begin registering students for kindergarten for the 2015-2016 School year starting April 6 and running through July 31 at the Central Office, 212 Market Street, Third Floor, in New Richmond.

Hours for registration will be from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday during the registration period. Parents are urged to register their kindergarten student as early as possible to help with classroom planning at the district’s three elementary schools.

Parents or legal guardians should bring the following information when registering their kindergarten student:  

                   

•           Student’s Original Birth Certificate                 

•           Student’s Social Security Card            

•           Student’s Immunization Records                    

•           Picture I.D. of Custodial Parent or Legal Guardian                 

•           Proof of Residency (cable bill, water bill, gas/electric bill)     

Open enrollment families must first apply for open enrollment before registering their kindergarten student.

A child must be 5 years old on or before August 1, 2015 to be eligible for kindergarten for the 2015-2016 school year.            

NRMS dominates Science Olympiad

New Richmond Middle School’s Science Olympiad team is headed back to next month’s Ohio Science Olympiad at Ohio State University with a lot of momentum after recording 1^st and 3^rd place finishes in the Cincinnati Regional Science Olympiad.

“Our goal at state is to break into the top 10. New Richmond placed 12^th last year (2014) up from a previous best of 28^th (in 2013) out of 40 schools,” said Ursula Miller, coordinator for New Richmond Science Olympiad Program.

New Richmond’s Black Team defended the school’s regional title with a low score of 70 in the 23-event competition, edging our Mason by 9 points. The NRMS Red Team finished third with 104 points, beating Mason’s No. 2 team by 8 points. Other school’s competing included Wyoming, Ross, Milford, Twin Valley South, Kings, National Trail, St. Mark’s Lutheran, St. Aloysius Gonzaga, Ridge Junior High, and St. James of the Valley.

 “It was especially gratifying to compete so well against large schools districts, such as Mason,” said Miller. “Our first-place win in the Cincinnati region qualifies Team New Richmond to advance to state competition at The Ohio State University in Columbus on April 11.”

New Richmond’s domination of the Cincinnati Regional Science Olympiad included a combined 22 top two finishes and 38 medal finishes ( top six finish. The New Richmond teams finished 1-2 in four of the 23 events.

“This is a great example of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and project-based learning molded together,” said New Richmond Supt. Adam Bird. “It’s a great learning experience for New Richmond students and our district is very thankful for the efforts of Mrs. Miller and the many adult volunteers who devoted  many hours went into making this happen.”

The cost of the Science Olympiad competition was raised by Mrs. Miller and her volunteers.

“We are grateful for financial support from PPG Foundation for its $1,000 grant and to Heather Ipsaro and Andrea Schultz for leading our other fund raisers,” said Mrs. Miller.

Micha Brumbaugh wins design contest

New Richmond High School senior Micha Brumbaugh won the Annual County Spring Litter Clean-up T-shirt Design Contest. She was presented an award and $200.00 at the County Commissioner's meeting Feb. 25. Mich's design will be used for T-shirts worn by volunteers who participate in the 2015 Clermont County litter and river sweep clean-up campaigns.

Rousing sendoff for Jordyn Torrens

New Richmond High School Freshman Jordyn Torrens got a rousing sendoff Feb. 25 to the Ohio high school state swim meet in Canton where she will compete in the women's Division II 100 Yard Butterfly event. Jordyn became on the fifth New Richmond High School swimmer to qualifier for the state meet joining Debbie Kyle, Nate Kramer, Alex Lewis and Tyler David, all coached by New Richmond coaching legend Judy Middeler.

Softball Alumni Game schedule March 21

The 3rd annual 2015 Softball Alumni game is scheduled for Saturday, March 21st @ 2:30 pm on the varsity softball field.  The 2015 Varsity team will scrimmage Little Miami at noon prior to the alumni game.

 This year's game will pit alumni against alumni with the teams being coached by Lady Lions varsity coach Jim Reaker and former New Richmond varsity softball Coach Bill Gabriel.  Anyone who has played for New Richmond High School is invited to participate.

There will be a social following the game at the Green Kayak in New Richmond.

NRHS hosts SBAAC girls tourney Feb. 14

New Richmond High School will host the 2015 Southern Buckeye Conference girls basketball tournament Saturday, Feb. 14 with six games beginning at 10 a.m. The NRHS Lady Lions will play at 2:30 p.m. against Bethel. Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for students good for all games. All games will be broadcast on WAOL-FM 99.5.

Mandatory College Credit Plus meeting

To all parents of students in grades 6 through 11:

New Richmond Exempted Village School District’s annual Informational meeting on College Credit Plus (formerly Post Secondary Educational Options Program) is Thursday, March 5, 2015 starting at 6:00 pm in the High School Choir Room.

This is a mandatory meeting for any student who wishes to pursue earning both college and high school credits whether at New Richmond High School or at UC Clermont via the College Credit Plus program during the 2015-16 school year.

A Representative from University of Cincinnati – Clermont will be our featured speaker.  She will explain the state of Ohio’s new options for students in grades 7 through 12 earning college credit while in high school, and the steps toward earning these credits.  Come and learn whether College Credit Plus is right for your child

NREVSD getting big bang for its buck

The New Richmond Exempted Village School District is getting a big bang for its buck when it comes to average spending per student to performance in the classroom according to the Ohio Department of Education.

New Richmond ranks second out of 20 similar Ohio school districts with a performance index of 102.6 against a per pupil spending of $9350. Perry Local leads the similar districts to New Richmond with a performance index of 103.4 but spends $3300 more per pupil ($12,687).

"Our spending is in-line with similar districts and our students continue to perform at a high level," said NREVSD Supt. Adam Bird.

The Performance Index measures the test results of every student, not just those who score proficient or higher. There are six levels on the index and districts receive points for every student in each of these levels. The higher the achievement level, the more the points awarded in the district's index.

Each level receives a multiplier with 1.0 going for proficient, 1.1 for accelerated, 1.2 for advanced, 1.3 for advanced plus, .6 for basic and .3 for limited with a possible score of 120. New Richmond, which received an A on the state report card for meeting 23 of  24 testing indicators, received 34.3 points for students testing at the proficient level, 30.7 for students testing at an accelerated level and 31.3 for students testing at an advanced level.

Only 9.1 percent of New Richmond students tested at a basic level for 5.5 points and 2.4 percent tested at a limited level for .7 points resulting in a state grade of B, which is considered an outstanding result for a district with a high percentage (42.6 for New Richmond) of students below the poverty level.

"We are very thankful for the growth of our students and the hard work of our teachers," said Bird.

New Richmond’s spending of $9350 per student is just $161 more than the state average and is broken down into expenditures of $6195 for classroom instruction and $3155 for non-classroom spending (administrative, building operations and transportation expenses). New Richmond ranks 154^th out of 279 districts of similar size for funds spent on classroom instruction.

G.A.T.E.S. students out to paint a brighter future

The New Richmond Exempted Village School District G.A.T.E.S. Program is sponsoring a Used Paint Drive Collection to Support Matthew 25 Ministries’ Rainbow Paint Re-blending Program which reuses leftover paint to provide a high-quality, re-blended/recycled latex paint to the poor throughout the U.S. and around the world.

“Rainbow Paint helps low-budget non-profits, schools, and public facilities complete maintenance, rehab, and upgrade projects at a low cost,” said NREVSD Gifted Coordinator Rachel Reynolds. “It enhances the quality of life for recipient individuals and organizations by improving and beautifying physical surroundings.”

G.A.T.E.S. students will have Drop-Off Stations at Locust Corner Elementary, Monroe Elementary and New Richmond Elementary during Parent-Teacher Conference nights Thursday, Feb. 5 (3:30 pm and 5:00-8:30 pm,) and Tuesday, Feb. 10 (3:30 pm and 5:00-8:00 pm). Drop off points will be  inside the front doors by the main school offices.

The students will be accepting original 1-gallon and 5-gallon latex paint containers with original labels only. No empty or almost empty cans will be accepted.

“The Rainbow Paint Re-blending Program reduces the amount of hazardous waste being deposited in landfills, public waterways and sewer systems,” said Mrs. Reynolds. “It also helps prevent poison exposures through accidental human contact or consumption of excess and leftover paint.”

Doug Foote honored by state association

Doug Foote, New Richmond High School athletic director/dean of students, has received the Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association’s Citation award in recognition of exceptional time, effort, and energy devoted to the OIAAA.

Mr. Foote also has been nominated as the next Secretary for the Southwest Ohio Athletic Administrators Association (SWOAA) and currently serves as a board member of the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Southwest District.

Each year, SWOADA recognizes and honors individuals within the Association for their dedication to the student/athletes, schools and communities they serve.

“Doug's dedication and hard work has gone a long way in providing New Richmond High School with a strong voice at the district, regional, and state levels in athletic/academic competitions,” said New Richmond High School Principal Mark Bailey.

Mr. Foote has been New Richmond’s athletic director since August of 2008. A graduate of Lynchburg-Clay High School and Morehead State University, Mr. Foote coached basketball for 26 years, including at the college level at Rio Grande University and Marietta College, where he was the men’s basketball coach for 15 years before coming to New Richmond.
