New Richmond Lions football coach Josh Stratton, five assistants, a parent volunteer and 25 players joined volunteerers at Miami Valley Christian Academy April 25 to help pack 25,568 means for the "Feed My Starving Children" program. The meals will feed 73 children, three times a day for an entire year.
"It was a great experience for our young men," said Stratton. "One player told me that it really made him feel good about himself to help others. We feed 73 children for an entire year! Not only that but it was a great bounding experience for our players and coaches. Coach (Josh) Wade actually smiled. Plus Malik Davis looks awesome in a hairnet. I think he may wear one to prom."

Monroe named School of Promise
New Richmond's Monroe Elementary has been honored as a School of Promise by the Ohio Department of Education for the 2011-12 school year.
To be named a School of Promise, 75 percent or more of students must score proficient or better on statewide achievement tests in reading and mathematics. The selected schools also are addressing achievement gaps, because the 75 percent proficiency measure applies to students in subgroups of 10 or more defined by race and economic disadvantage. Schools of Promise have 40 percent or more of their students eligible for free or reduced-price meals.

“For years our Schools of Promise program has identified schools with great results despite facing challenging circumstances,” said Dr. Richard A. Ross, Ohio's superintendent of public instruction. “Our Schools of Promise do not let circumstance determine outcomes and do not let obstacles keep them from providing a quality education. Our Schools of Promise prove that there’s no reason why Ohio cannot be a national leader in providing a high-quality education in every district for every child.”
"This award is a tribute to the great amount of time our staff spends in analyzing student data and then allowing that data to inform our instructional decisions for each individual student," said Monroe principal Joe Roach, who acknowledged the leadership of former principal Mark Bailey who was principal during the 2011-12 school year.
"It is a total team effort at Monroe," added Roach. "Our special area teachers and our counselor put in hours during the week to provide reading intervention to our students when they are not doing their usual duties."
"It was very gratifying for me as the former principal to work with the fine staff and parents to help each child to reach their full potential," said Bailey, now the principal at New Richmond High School. "Everyone involved should take great pride in the fact that at Monroe the students always come first. Great students, parents, teachers, and support staff working together can make a difference, and I feel very fortunate to have played a very small role in the academic growth of Monroe Elementary School."
Monroe Elementary was one of six Clermont County schools to be named School of Promise award winners by the state. Also honored were Bethel, Clermont Northeatern and Goshen middle schools, Goshen's Spaulding Elementary and Milford's Charles L. Seipelt Elementary.

NREVSD prepares for the Common Core
The New
Richmond Board of Education has been presented with a K-12 English Language
Arts course of study for the 2013-14 school year that completes a two-year
project by the district to meet the new Common Core State Standards in math,
reading and writing recently adopted by the State of Ohio.
The
school board is expected to vote on the adoption of the K-12 English Language
Arts initiative at its May 20 meeting. Board members received a detailed
presentation of the project from Supt. Adam Bird during their April 15 meeting.
“This
language arts initiative is the result of more than a year of planning with a
steering committee and grade level teams evaluating our current practices and
the proposed Common Core State Standards,” explained John Frye, director of
Staff and Pupil Services for the New Richmond Exempted Village School District.
Examples
of the project are on display in the New Richmond Board of Education Office on
the third floor of the Market Street building in New Richmond. (212 Market
Street, NRO 45157). Residents are welcome
to browse the presentation which includes all reading materials for grades
K-12, including 180 read aloud books for the district’s Kindergarten classes.
John Frye explains the NREVSD Language Arts Course of Study in detail in this YouTube video:
Frye noted that the Common Core goals are internationally bench marked and emulate expectations found in high performing systems abroad, but do not call for a specific curriculum or reading list.
“Rather,
they lay out an ambitious set of goals for the math, reading and writing skills
that children should acquire as they move through school,” Frye said.
By fifth grade, for example, students will be
required to produce essays in which they introduce, support and defend
arguments, using specific facts and details. By 12th grade, they will be asked
to solve problems and answer questions by conducting focused research projects
— using skills that are generally associated today with the first year of
college.
The
standards are flexible so that states and localities can implement them in
varying ways and New Richmond’s implementation is designed to zero in on a
rich, reading experience for New Richmond students as well as preparing the
district to meet Ohio’s Third Grade Reading Guarantee.
“It’s
important that we have alignment at the elementary level and agreement on
common reading materials so students coming into middle school from our three
elementary schools all have the same background, all have the same experiences
having read the same books,” said Frye.
The
language arts initiative follows new math programs adopted by the district to
align the district’s three elementary schools with the Common Core math
standards.
“Envisions
Math was introduced in grades K-6 two
years ago, and this year, Math Innovations was introduced to students in grades
6-8 that more closely align to new the standards,” said Frye. “Integrated Math
9-10-11 is midway in the implementation schedule as the high school moves to an
integrated approach to teaching the traditional subjects of Algebra I & II
and Geometry.”

Thank you for supporting the arts in our district!
Art education equips students to form mental images,
which can be used to solve problems—an ability that chemists, engineers, and
architects use to create models and that inventors use to think up new ideas.
Art
education requires students to use their eyes and hands to give form to
ideas generated in the brain—a discipline that Nobel Prize winner Eric Kandel
proved boosts brain power.
Research
also indicates that high school art programs engage students and keep
in school those at-risk of dropping out.
