Amy Cholkas featured in CET videos

When Cincinnati public television CET approached the Cincinnati Art Museum for a recommendation of an art teacher for its multimedia project, Vertices: Geometry Meets Art, they didn’t have to wait long for an answer.

The teacher for the job was New Richmond Elementary art teacher Amy Cholkas, who has worked with the Art Museum for years writing lesson plans to show classroom teachers how to use the collections of the Art Museum in their classrooms.

New Richmond art teacher Amy Cholkas (right) gets her students, surrounded by the CET crew, ready for filming of a segment for CET's Geometry Meets Art. Students pictured (from left) are Cheyenne Young, Maggie McDaniel, Jacob Noble, Lily Jones, Gabriel Miller and Cade Heflin.

“We chose New Richmond because of a recommendation from the Art Museum and the teacher, who had a strong understanding of art integration so we wanted to bring her kids into the project,” noted Lauren Hess, Art Projects Manager for CET.

Cholkas, who is in her 12th year at New Richmond Elementary and regularly shows the art work of her students at the Art Museum, didn’t hesitate when asked to take on the project. The relationship between math and art fit her perfectly.

(From left) Adriana Solis, Chris Cooper, Ella Calhoun and Griffin Saunders listen to instructions before filming of a WCET segment of Geometry Meets Art.

(From left) Antonia Wills, Bronte Reinert and Aaron Prescott wait for filming to begin of a segment of CET's Geometry Meets Art.

“I often address the art and math standards in my class,” said Cholkas, who wrote two complete lesson plans for the project.

The Geometry Meets Art project, funded by a grant from eTech/Ohio, called for taking a fresh look at K-2 geometric concepts with artwork from the Cincinnati Art Museum and is now on line at http://www.cetconnect.org/vertices.

Cholkas is featured in two 5-minute professional development videos in the recognizing geometric shapes and creating 3-d object segments.

“CET made a few modifications to make sure we were addressing all the standards of the grant,” said Cholkas.

The parts of Cholkas’ lesson plans not included in her videos were used in video clips recorded by the Art Museum for the project.

The two 5-minute videos were condensed from five hours of filming over two days last winter at New Richmond Elementary featuring 13 first and second-grade students selected by Cholkas.

“I was asked to choose children who would be interested and could follow the directions of the TV crew as well as my own directions,” said Cholkas., who selected Cheyenne Young, Maggie McDaniel, Jacob Noble, Lily Jones, Gabriel Miller and Cade Heflin for the first day and Chris Cooper, Adriana Solis, Antonia Wills, Griffin Saunders, Aaron Prescott, Ella Calhoun and Bronte Reinert for the second day.

“I think it was a great experience for the children who were involved for three hours of filming and they all were great,” said Cholkas. “The only exception I have was I felt there was a little more showing of me when there should have been showing the kids.”

Cholkas’ segments are available online at http://www.cetconnect.org/MediaPlayer.aspx?vid=4185&topic=0 and http://www.cetconnect.org/MediaPlayer.aspx?vid=4184&topic=0.

Rivertown Market IGA in New Richmond has turned its entrance into an art gallery for New Richmond Elementary artists.

Gary Combs, principal of New Richmond Elementary, wanted to reach out to the community for involvement in his school's activities and Linda Taylor, owner of Rivertown, graciously provided space to display student artwork.

Amy Cholkas, the school’s art teacher, selects student artwork for display at the store. Artwork by the following N.R.E. artists is currently featured: Alden Story, Abby Maness, Dane Bowman, Madison Jowers, Hannah Shultz, Cade Heflin, Chad Dean, Vincent Bingham, Emma Blake, Elizabeth Shinkle, David Woolum, Andrew Staten, Jett Naylor and Austin Ewing.

““N.R.E. students are all excited at the possibility of having their art selected for the display,” said Cholkas. “Most families in our community shop at Rivertown IGA, so friends and family members will be able to see the exciting art projects our students create while shopping at their favorite supermarket.”

It's official: New Richmond is Excellent

The New Richmond Exempted Village School District has received its commendation from the Ohio Board of Education for its "exemplary performance" during the 2008-09 school year that resulted in the district being rated Excellent.

New Richmond Superintendent of Schools Mr. Thomas Durbin received the certificate along with the following letter from the State Board of Education.
Thomas Durbin
New Richmond Exempted Village School District
212 Market St FI 3RD
New Richmond, OH 45157-1373

Dear Superintendent:

Congratulations from the State Board of Education and the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) for the exemplary performance of New Richmond Exempted Village School District during the 2008-2009 school year. The enclosed certificate recognizes your achievement for:

Achieving the designation of Excellent

Exceeding expected growth on the Value-Added Measure

We all can be proud of the decade of progress in Ohio education. In the 2008-2009 school year, 85 percent of all districts received one of the state's top three designations (Excellent with Distinction, Excellent or Effective). Since the 1999-2000 school year, the Performance Index, reflecting the achievement of every student, has increased by more than 26 percent. Additionally, nearly 73 percent of districts exceeded the growth standard in the Value-Added Measure, which shows progress made since the prior year.

It is the goal of the State Board and ODE to graduate all students with a sense of purpose and preparation for college, a career and life. Districts like yours successfully capture the energy of educators, parents, families, students and your community to keep student achievement at a high level.

Congratulations again on your achievements, and best wishes for continued success this year.

Sincerely,

Monroe students turn trash into Art

Monroe Elementary’s Art Earth Club with the help of three art education students from Northern Kentucky University has turned Ohio River trash into art sculptures that will be on display in front of the Front Street Café Saturday, Oct. 10 during New Richmond’s annual Java Jazz’N Art Show.

“The NKU students had to do a social justice project and they choose our school,” said Adrian Hawk, Monroe’s art teacher and advisor to the Art Earth Club.

The NKU students working with the AEC are Alicia Dodson and Mike Felts, both graduates of New Richmond High School, and Lauren Newman, graduate of Clermont Northeastern. They helped the Monroe students and parents collect river back trash for one hour Sept. 19 that was turned into a sculpture for the Art Show.

“The kids created a large scale sculpture that will be on display at Front Street Café just to make a statement about conservation and helping the environment,” said Hawk. “They decided what shape the sculpture would take and made the artistic decisions with the found objects.”

Felts, a 1995 New Richmond graduate, earned a degree in graphics art from Cincinnati Art Institute and worked for years as a graphic artist before returning to college to pursue art education degree. He is not surprised at the importance the New Richmond school district places on art education.

“I went through the art program at New Richmond and I’m glad art is just as important today as it was when I was in school,” said Felts, who introduced the art club to silk screening during the six week project. In addition to the sculpture project, the NKU students are working with the Art Earth Club in other areas including showing different forms of art, T-shirt design and plant and tree plantings.

“I brought a water color that I did when I was in high school at New Richmond and some prints I’ve made at NKU,” said Dodson, a senior at NKU. “This is a great project for me since I live right up the road from Monroe.”

Monroe Elementary Art Earth Club members Elise Bezold and Erin O'Toole work on their portion of the sculpture the club made from trash collected off the river bank in New Richmond.

NRE wins Healthy Ohio Gold award

New Richmond Elementary was one of only three schools in Clermont County to receive the Ohio Department of Health’s Buckeye Best Schools Gold Award for the 2008-09 school year.

The Buckeye Best Healthy Schools Award recognizes schools that promote the health and wellness of students and staff through nutrition programs, increased physical activity and prevention of use of tobacco.

“It’s a combination of our drug awareness program, the nutrition program and the physical fitness program at our school,” said New Richmond Elementary principal Gary Combs. “There’s a point system that rates each category and they award gold, silver and bronze flags and we scored high enough to meet the gold standard.”

Julian Renner, principal of New Richmond’s Locust Corner Elementary, was honored October 1 by the Southwest Ohio Art Education Association (SWOAEA) and The Department of Learning and Interpretation of The Cincinnati Art Museum as the 2009 Distinguished Educator of Art Education.

“It’s huge honor and I’m very grateful,” said Renner, who is starting her 6th year as principal at Locust Corner Elementary.

“At last fall’s Ohio Art Education Association conference, members of Southwest OAEA voted Julian Renner as Distinguished Educator for Art Education in Southwest Ohio.,” said Amy Cholkas, SWOAEA regional director. “Tim Cook, Jeff Folkens and Paige McConnell (visual art, band and vocal music teachers at Locust Corner) wrote enthusiastic letters of support for their principal as an advocate for the arts in the New Richmond district.”

“Mrs. Renner has a strong belief that art, both visual and performing, is a part of what makes up the development of a ‘whole child’,” said Cook in his letter.

“Whenever there has been a need . . . Mrs. Renner has found the budget or worked with our PTO to take care of it.”

Folkens described Renner as a principal who supports the arts in exemplary ways.

“Mrs. Renner has always seen the value of the special areas, displayed awareness of the unique needs of the specials, and has been respectful of the specials teachers’ time . . . She genuinely trusts her staff and the staff genuinely appreciates that trust.”

“She is here for every program, every event, every disciplinary situation, every celebration and every difficulty,” noted McConnell in her letter. “She cares for the students and the teachers with selfless abandon.”

“I’m honored that they think that highly about me and they think I’m trying to do the best for the arts,” said Renner. “And now they are going to honor me with an award that I feel I don’t deserve. I just want to help the kids out and help my staff members out.”

Also being honored by the SWOAEA Oct. 1 will be John Golubieski as Distinguished Citizen for Art Education, and Jen Baldwin of the Art Machine, Distinguished Business/ Organization for Art Education.

NR teens compete in Triathlon

Morgan Olenick and Alex White, who will be freshmen at New Richmond High School, this fall, competed in the Morgan’s Canoe 30th annual Little Miami Triathlon. The triathlon is the oldest in the United States and is composed of a 6 mile canoe, 5.5 mile run and 18 mile bike race in that order and benefits the Cincinnati Association for the Blind and the Boy Scouts of America.

The girls set off in their canoe by 08:40 AM and had completed the race as a team in an impressive display of athleticism in just over 3 hours and 56 minutes. The desire to compete had been fueled by a challenge posed last September by Morgan’s father Chris Olenick and the girls Physical Education Instructor, Phil Heflin (NRMS) whom also competed in the event as a team.

The girls trained aggressively running cross country in the fall and track in the spring for NRMS, and also competing recently in the Cincinnati Reds - Run for Home - Red Legs 5K race which benefits the Cincinnati Reds Community Fund. The two teams continue to train and plan to face-off again in the event next year.
