Monroe art a hit in Columbus

It isn’t an easy task for Monroe Elementary visual arts teacher Adrian Hawk to single out individuals from her talented pool of young artists who fill about every blank space on the walls of their school with their artwork.

Rosemary Wildey, grade 2, and Freyah Stacy, grade 3, made her job easy this year when she went looking for artwork to recommend for display in Columbus during the month of March.

Stacy have their artwork on display in Columbus
during the month of March. They are pictured with
Monroe visual arts teacher Adrian Hawk.
"Rosemary and Freyah are old souls when it comes to their art making,” said Hawk. “I am always amazed at the maturity and beauty that they seem to express through their art making processes.”

Rosemary was chosen as an exhibitor for the 34th annual Young People’s Art Exhibition at the Rhodes State Office Tower. She was one of 129 artists statewide chosen for this exhibit.

Freyah was chosen as one of 124 exhibitors for the 2014 Youth Art Month Exhibition at the State Teacher’s Retirement System building in Columbus.

Both exhibits are sponsored by the Ohio Art Eduction Association which is the professional organization for art teachers in Ohio and is dedicated to promoting art education and recognition for quality student artists at both the state and regional levels.

Students with artwork on display were recognized at receptions on March 15. Rosemary was able to attend but Freyah was sick and unable to attend.

"It was pretty cool,” said Rosemary. “My cousins were there.  My whole family was there.  I liked seeing the other art in the show."

"I was sick so I didn't get to go to the show in Columbus,” said Freyah. “I wish I could have gone."

"I am so lucky to have them in my room every week,” added Hawk. “They inspire  me to be a better teacher."

Locust Corner PE teacher Kathy
Wilson was honored at the Clermont
County Chamber of Commerce's Salute
to Leaders Banquet
Locust Corner teacher Kathy Wilson was honored at the Clermont County Chamber of Commerce’s Salute to Leaders Banquet which honored non-elected individuals or organizations that made a major contribution to the quality of life in Clermont County in 2013.

Ms. Wilson was nominated by the Pierce Township Trustees for her service with the READ program at LCE. She founded Locust Corner’s reading dog program in 2007 and organizes several community members who bring their therapy dogs to weekly reading sessions with Locust Corner’s K-3 grade students.

“These group members also come to all three of our Family Literacy Nights,” noted LCE teacher Erin Parker. “Ms. Wilson's program started with her star reading dog, Gator and many of the other members and their dogs were present to honor Ms. Wilson.”

LCE raises $963 for Leukemia Society

Losing two days of their fund drive to snow days didn’t slow down Locust Corner Elementary’s giving spirit during its annual Pennies for Patients drive for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

LCE Student Council members  pictured with the school's donors' board and results.

“In a two week period, with snow days included, LCE raised $963.00,” noted LCE Student Council advisor Erin Parker. “We held our drive leading up to the Super Bowl and students were allowed to place their collection box in the team they wanted to see win the Super Bowl.

The Broncos ended up losing the Super Bowl but won the LCE competition but helped make the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society the big winner.

NRMS reclaims science championship

Competing against top national and Ohio Science Olympiad teams in two prestigious invitational meets in preparation for the regional and state competition paid off for New Richmond Middle School which won its second  Science Olympiad Cincinnati Regional championship in three years March 1 at at UC Blue Ash College.

NRMS Team Black finished with a record low score of 60 and with students medaling in every event, another record.  NRMS Team Red finished in fifth place in the 16-team competition which included teams from Mason, Wyoming, Ross, Loveland, Kings, Twin Valley, National Trail and along with 5 private schools including Summit Country Day.

The 2014 New Richmond Middle School Science Olympiad team won its second Cincinnati Regional Championship in three years March 1 with a record low score of 60 points and a record of medals in all 23 events.

“We have worked harder and practiced more than ever and it has paid off,” said Science Olympiad coach Josh Grischow. “Getting more experience with two invitational meets (Wright State University and Centerville’s Maysig) really helped with making the kids comfortable for this competition."

The results of those tournaments also allowed Grischow and his assistants (New Richmond Middle School science department teachers Pam Hughes, Tina Grippa and Doug Smiddy) to figure out their best 15 students regardless of grade level to place on the same team.

“We had several kids practice late on Friday, then perform in the school musical, wake up early on Saturday, compete with us all day, and then go back to perform in the musical Saturday night,” noted Grischow.  “We had one girl compete with us, play in a soccer game, and come back for the awards ceremony, picking up a first place medal in the process.  It's a privilege to have such multi-talented kids.”

Teams competed individually or in groups in a series of 23 events which tested their knowledge of science skills, processes, and applications in a wide range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, physics, technology, earth science, and mathematics.

NRMS Team Black finished first in seven events,  second in six events and had no finish higher than fifth in the 23 events in winning the championship by 28 points over second place Mason Middle School.
NRMS Team Red had one first place and finished 9th or better in 22 of the 23 events and finished 5th overall.

PPG Industries gave a $1,000 grant to help defray team costs.

The New Richmond Middle School Science Olympiad team advances to the Ohio state finals at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio on April 26, 2014 where 40 middle school and 40 senior high school teams will compete.

"We are now used to qualifying for the state tournament, but we haven't cracked the top 20 after three straight years," said Grischow.  "Our goal is to work even harder and start becoming a threat state-wide."
