NREVSD gets an ‘A’ from the state

The standards are tougher than ever but the New Richmond Exempted Village School District still ranks at the top in the annual Ohio Department of Education report card for Ohio’s schools.

New Richmond met 23 of 24 state  indicators and also received an 'A' grade in the important Value Added category for an overall grade of 'A' for the 2012-2013 school year. The only indicator not met (75 percent of students passing a grade level test) was 7th grade math.

“It's been a diligent, team effort,” said NREVSD Supt. Adam Bird. “I especially want to thank our students for being so motivated and willing to do what it takes to grow and improve.  Additional thanks to our teachers, aides, support staff, and the Administrative Team.  We have so many employees who go above and beyond the normal hours of work in the best interests of our students.  On behalf of our Board of Education, I thank you.”

The overall ‘A’ in Value Added (which ranks how much a student grew from one year to the next) got the biggest applause from the superintendent.

“I am ecstatic about our value added score,” said Bird. “Value Added is an important document. It not only tells how our buildings have grown students but also how our teachers are performing. It not only tells how our buildings have grown students but also how our teachers are performing.”

As a district, New Richmond exceeded the expected student growth by 3.14 points in the state grading system. Only sixth grade reading and math and 7th grade overall failed to exceed expected growth. The district received a ‘C’ in progress by gifted students, a ‘B’ in progress by students in the lowest 20% of achievement and a ‘C’ in students with disabilities.

“A ‘C’ is not a bad grade,” noted Bird. “Getting a ‘C’ means you met the expected growth of a student.”
Value Added is an important document for teachers.

This is the first year where value added is reported for individual teachers and how their students met the expected growth (an estimate assigned by the state) and is used is teacher evaluations.

Besides the ‘A’ overall and in value added, the NREVSD received a ‘B’ in performance index, which s a measure of points schools earn against a total of 120 points. The district’s performance index for 2012-2013 was 101.9 which increased for the fourth straight year.

“However, we still have work to do,” said Bird.  “Our subgroup scores show small areas where we can improve.  I know that we will continue to strive for student growth for all our students.”
